FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
How does HubSpot obtain the customer data used for the ROI calculator?
What types of customer data are used for the ROI calculator?
The data used in the ROI calculator can be categorized into two groups: personal data (as defined in the HubSpot customer data processing agreement); and HubSpot product usage data.
HubSpot collects personal data from customers when they fill out web forms or interact with our websites, such as subscribing to a HubSpot blog, signing up for a webinar, or using customer support services. Additionally, HubSpot collects personal data when customers sign up for a HubSpot account, create or modify user information, adjust settings, or provide related information to access or utilize our subscription service.
Usage data includes metrics and information about how customers interact with and utilize the subscription service, such as the most frequently used product features, when an object (like a ticket) is created and closed, and how often specific functions (such as workflows) are triggered in their account.
To ensure the protection of our customers' data, HubSpot employs anonymization techniques to remove or modify personally identifiable information so that the data cannot be linked to a specific individual. HubSpot utilizes three standard anonymization techniques for customer data: attribute suppression, generalization, and aggregation.

Which HubSpot customers are included in the data used in the ROI calculator?
The data used in this calculator is derived from aggregated data from HubSpot customers worldwide who have had Marketing or Sales Hub Professional or Enterprise for at least 12 months between January 2019 and April 2022.
To be considered, the sample for each metric had to meet the following criteria for Marketing Hub customers:
- Website Traffic: They must have installed the HubSpot tracking code on their website.
- Marketing Leads: They must have activated the form functionality.
- Website Conversion Rate: They must have installed the HubSpot tracking code on their website and activated the form functionality.
The sample size for each region, industry, and metric varies. However, to ensure data privacy and accuracy, HubSpot does not share aggregated data from customer cohorts whose sample size does not meet the defined threshold for cohort size. In such cases, the global value for the respective metric is used by default.
How is the average improvement for each metric determined?
The average improvement for each metric reflects customer performance 12 months after purchase compared to the average in the first month after purchasing Marketing Hub or Sales Hub.
The exception is the web conversion rate, where customer performance 12 months after purchase is compared to the average of the first three months after purchase.
HubSpot places great emphasis on ensuring that the average improvement values used in this calculator accurately reflect the experiences of HubSpot customers. Therefore, the data is thoroughly examined for errors, missing information, and data distribution before analyzing customer data. Statistical procedures are also employed to identify outliers and cleanse the data, ensuring that unusual values do not distort the monthly average values. In instances of heavily skewed distributions, the median value is utilized instead of the mean, as the median proves to be the best measure of central tendency for skewed data.
